level of japanese needed for visual novels?

I passed JLPT Level 2 last year, but I still cannot read visual novels yet.
That really sucks and it means I still have a long, long ways to go. >__<
JLPT Level 2 really means nothing since according to a Kanji Kentei game on the DS, I was at Level 8 which is the grade school level...
I should be glad it wasn't the infant level.
Even JLPT Level 1 will not help I think, but I suppose I should work to pass that in 2 years.
